【Financial News | Chuncheon = Kim Gi-seop, reporter】A public hearing will bring together supporters and opponents, as well as residents, to discuss a tentative plan to raise Gangwon provincial council members’ monthly allowances by 20% and set their annual remuneration for 2027 at 71.89 million won.
According to Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province on the 20th, the province will hold a public hearing at 3 p.m. on the 21st at Global Hall at Gangwon Provincial University to determine payment standards for provincial council members’ remuneration. The hearing was organized to gather a wide range of residents’ views on the payment standards provisionally decided on September 22 by the Remuneration Review Committee for Members of the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Provincial Council.
Under the tentative plan, annual legislative activity expenses will remain at the current 24 million won, while the monthly allowance has been set at 47.89 million won a year, up 20% from the previous year. The annual total remuneration will increase by freezing legislative activity expenses and raising only the monthly allowance.
The hearing will begin with an explanation of the tentative decision, followed by presentations from two speakers each for the supporting and opposing sides, a question-and-answer session between the speakers, and comments from audience members. Residents attending can freely share their views on the tentative plan during the audience-comment period.
After comprehensively reviewing the views expressed at the public hearing and residents’ opinions submitted in advance, the committee plans to make a final decision at its second meeting on the remuneration payment standards to apply for four years, from 2027 through 2030.
A Gangwon Province official said, “We prepared the public hearing so that all residents can make their voices heard, from presentations by both supporters and opponents to comments from audience members,” and added, “This is an important decision that will set the level of compensation for provincial council members for the next four years, so we hope many residents will come in person and share their views.”
