[Financial News] LIG Defense & Aerospace and Doosan Enerbility have joined forces to localize engines for next-generation guided weapons. The two companies plan to combine their capabilities in guided-weapons systems development and engine technology to reduce dependence on foreign sources for core technologies and strengthen their competitiveness in the global defense market.
LIG Defense & Aerospace and Doosan Enerbility said on the 20th that they had signed an MOU on the 19th at Bundang Doosan Tower in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, to cooperate on developing engines for guided weapons and aircraft. Key officials from both companies, including Park Tae-sik, head of LIG Defense & Aerospace’s Missile Systems Business Division, and Son Seung-woo, head of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Business Group, attended the signing ceremony.
Under the agreement, LIG Defense & Aerospace will handle guided-weapons systems development and systems integration, while Doosan Enerbility will develop engines for use in those systems. The companies plan to establish a framework for cooperation at every stage, including engine development, testing, evaluation and certification, and to pursue joint research and development to enhance the performance of next-generation guided weapons.
LIG Defense & Aerospace plans to draw on its accumulated expertise in guided-weapons systems development, while Doosan Enerbility will apply its technological capabilities in power-generation gas turbines to developing aircraft propulsion systems. The companies aim to identify practical models for cooperation and strengthen the stability of the domestic defense supply chain.
Demand for long-range precision-strike systems has been rising in the global defense market, increasing the importance of securing high-performance propulsion systems. Localizing guided-weapons engines is particularly significant because it can reduce dependence on foreign technology while easing constraints arising from export controls on key components.
“This agreement is an important opportunity to strengthen the competitiveness of next-generation guided-weapons systems by bringing together expertise in guided-weapons systems development and technological capabilities in engines,” said Park Tae-sik, head of LIG Defense & Aerospace’s Missile Systems Business Division. “Through technical cooperation between the two companies, we will contribute to advancing domestic defense technology and enhancing the global competitiveness of the K-Defense Industry.”
“This agreement is highly significant because it establishes a long-term framework for cooperation with LIG Defense & Aerospace, which has the country’s leading capabilities in guided-weapons systems development,” said Son Seung-woo, head of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Business Group. “By combining the core technologies held by both companies, we will contribute to the localization of K-Defense Industry technologies that can compete in the global market.”
