Apple sent invitations to the media and analysts on the 19th, saying it would hold a new product launch event on the 28th (local time). The invitation was titled “Apple Experience in LA.”
In an email accompanying the invitation, Apple hinted that the upcoming launch would feature high-quality, high-priced “Pro” devices equipped with powerful in-house chips.
According to CNBC, Melius Research analyst Ben Reitzes said in an analysis note that day that they expected new Mac computers, “including touchscreen laptops,” to be unveiled. They also forecast that the first launch event by John Ternus, who became Apple's new CEO last month, succeeding Tim Cook, would symbolize a “meaningful transition” for Apple.
Ternus is set to hold his third product launch event just over a month after taking office. After unveiling new iPhones, including the company's first foldable phone, “Duo,” at its headquarters in Cupertino, California, he also unveiled a smart home hub and a new smart speaker with a screen called “HomeView” in New York.
His third launch event is therefore expected to showcase new Mac computers.
Apple unveiled the MacBook Pro laptop and its new low-cost model, the MacBook Neo, last spring, and released updated Mac mini and Mac Studio desktops powered by new chips in August. However, the iMac desktop has not had an updated model since October 2024.
The Mac computer business remains a relatively small part of Apple, where the iPhone is still the mainstay, accounting for about 10% of revenue.
Even so, the Mac has emerged as Apple's most powerful weapon in artificial intelligence (AI), because Apple's own chips can access more memory at higher speeds than other commercially available chips.
In particular, unlike other Big Tech companies, Apple has not overinvested in AI, helping its stock perform respectably this year. It is up 26.3% this year, far outpacing the 12.5% gain in the Standard & Poor's (S&P) 500 index, a market benchmark.
