[Financial News] SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has unveiled a plan to give one share of his SpaceX holdings to every child in the United States next year. The amount needed to carry it out is estimated at about 14 trillion won. However, he has not specified how the shares would actually be distributed or provided a concrete timeline, leaving the plan’s feasibility uncertain.
On the 19th, Musk said on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that he intended to give one SpaceX share to every child in the United States next year. He stressed that the plan would be a starting point for various initiatives he would pursue in the future. Musk has pinned the post to the top of his X account.
Under his plan, about 72 million U.S. children would become SpaceX shareholders. Based on the U.S. Census Bureau’s estimate of the child population and SpaceX’s valuation of $146 per share, distributing the shares would require a total of $10.5 billion (about 13.966 trillion won), according to estimates.
Given Musk’s vast personal wealth, the financial burden itself does not appear likely to be substantial. His net worth is reportedly more than $900 billion (about 1,196 trillion won). Of that, his SpaceX stake alone is valued at about $700 billion (about 931 trillion won). The amount needed for the share gift would be about 1.2% of his total net worth.
The remarks came shortly after Musk expressed his views on how corporate shares could be used for public-benefit purposes. Earlier, in response to news that AI company Anthropic had decided to place 5% of its equity in a public-benefit fund, Musk recommended distributing shares directly to the general public rather than providing indirect support through a fund.
However, Musk has not disclosed a detailed plan regarding who would receive the shares, the procedures, or the timing. Whether his vast wealth can be translated into actual share gifts will likely be clear only after specific implementation plans are made public.
