Kim issued a statement through the Korean Central News Agency on the 19th titled “We do not defend our sovereignty with words,” and threatened as much.
North Korea claimed that the South Korean military had threatened its border fortification work and carried out warning shots and provocative broadcasts. Kim claimed, “Citing the baseless pretext that our personnel deployed to construction work on the southern border barriers had crossed the border, [the South Korean military] fired warning shots with automatic rifles and large-caliber machine guns, threatening the safety of our soldiers. From August 1 through October 17, the number of provocations involving warning broadcasts over loudspeakers had reached as many as 2,870, while warning shots had been fired 201 times.” She went on with her sophistry, saying, “This has become even more blatant and gone too far since they fabricated the staged landmine explosion.”
She identified the guard posts in the areas of the South Korean Army’s II Corps (the 7th and 15th Infantry Divisions) and III Corps (the 21st and 22nd Infantry Divisions) as places where provocative warning broadcasts over loudspeakers were frequent. She also said warning shots were being fired particularly often at Military Police Post 278 in the Demilitarized Zone, in the 21st Infantry Division area of III Corps. She claimed that between October 1 and 17 alone, there had been 998 provocative warning broadcasts over loudspeakers and 91 warning shots.
She also claimed that from the 15th through the 17th of this month, the South Korean military had issued warning broadcasts around 350 times and fired around 60 warning shots in various areas along the southern border. Kim claimed that the Lee Jae-myung administration’s anti-communism surpassed that of the Yoon Suk Yeol administration. She said, “The Lee Jae-myung administration, which called for reconciliation and peace from the beginning of its time in power and projected a conciliatory image, is actually far surpassing the Yoon Suk Yeol administration—a vicious conservative government that openly promoted anti-communism—in its anti-North Korea confrontation maneuvers.”
She also threatened that a great calamity would come amid the current crisis. Kim said, “As a preemptive and suppressive measure, we are considering reinforcing the deployment of tactical strike assets near the entire southern border in preparation for contingencies, and resuming loudspeaker broadcasts toward South Korea,” threatening to take additional measures if necessary. North Korea also warned that it would not merely talk about defending its sovereignty. [email protected] Reporter Kim Kyung-soo
