Minister of the Interior and Safety Yoon Ho-joong reads President Lee Jae-myung’s memorial address at the 78th Yeosun Incident Joint Memorial Ceremony, held on the 19th at Ocheon Green Plaza in Suncheon, Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City. Provided by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
President Lee Jae-myung said he would make uncovering the truth about the Yeosu-Suncheon 10.19 Incident (the Yeosun Incident) a national policy priority and complete the investigation report to restore the honor of the victims and their bereaved families.
President Lee made the remarks in a memorial address read on his behalf by Minister of the Interior and Safety Yoon Ho-joong at the 78th anniversary joint memorial ceremony for the Yeosun Incident, held on the 19th at Ocheon Green Plaza in Suncheon, Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City. This was the first time a memorial address in the president’s name had been officially delivered at the joint ceremony.
In his memorial address, President Lee said, “The state’s responsibility does not end simply with the enactment of a law and the start of efforts to uncover the truth,” and added, “We will make uncovering the truth about the Yeosun Incident a national policy priority, complete the investigation report, and fully restore the honor of the victims and their bereaved families.” He went on to say, “We will build a country where unjust losses caused by state power are never repeated.”
About 800 people attended the ceremony, including Min Hyung-bae, mayor of Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, Minister Yoon, relatives of victims of the Yeosun Incident, and citizens. The ceremony began with pre-event programs, including rites from the four major religions and offerings of tea and dance, and continued with a moment of silence for the victims, flower-laying and incense offerings, a report on the course of events, remarks by a representative of the bereaved families, the president’s memorial address, accounts from bereaved families, a reading of the winning work of the Peace Literature Award, memorial performances, and a chorus of memorial songs.
