[Financial News] The Yuhan Foundation presented the Yu Jae-ra Volunteer Award to four volunteers who have dedicated themselves to helping their neighbors.
The Yuhan Foundation said it held the 35th Yu Jae-ra Volunteer Award ceremony at Yuhan Corporation’s large training room on the 19th and presented the recipients with plaques and prize money.
This year’s recipients are Ham Jeong-hwa, operations team leader at the Health Promotion Center of Ajou University Hospital, in the nursing category; Kim Hyeon-ju, a teacher at Taeyeon School, in the education category; Lee Dong-seon, Tanzania branch director of Serving Friends International, in the overseas volunteering field of the welfare category; and Yun Su-jin, head of nursing at Dongbaek St. Luke Hospital, in the hospice field of the welfare category.
Operations team leader Ham Jeong-hwa has volunteered for medically underserved communities for more than 20 years, providing medical support to around 9,000 people in Korea and abroad. She was recognized for helping close gaps in access to care by supporting patients from examinations, surgery and treatment referrals through follow-up health care.
Teacher Kim Hyeon-ju has devoted herself to arts education for students with developmental disabilities and founded Yeon, a dance troupe for people with intellectual disabilities, where she has continued to provide free instruction. She was recognized for helping lay the groundwork for people with disabilities to live independently, including by supporting employment so that the troupe’s 24 members could work as professional artists.
Branch director Lee Dong-seon has led groundwater development and drinking-water supply projects in Tanzania for 22 years. The projects have provided safe water to 446 villages and schools, benefiting around 560,000 residents. Lee has also contributed to improving local residents’ health and living conditions through water-quality improvements and health and hygiene education.
Head of nursing Yun Su-jin has practiced holistic care, looking after terminally ill patients and their families in hospice settings for about 30 years. She was also recognized for broadening public understanding of hospice through professional training and her work in film and writing.
The ceremony was attended by Yuhan Foundation Chairman Won Hui-mok, Yuhan Academy Chairman Choi Sang-hu, Yuhan Corporation President and CEO Cho Uk-je, and 30 past award recipients, among others. Chairman Won expressed his respect and gratitude to the recipients, who have stood by their neighbors for many years, and said he would carry on Ms. Yu Jae-ra’s spirit of sharing.
The Yu Jae-ra Volunteer Award was established in 1992 to honor the wishes of Ms. Yu Jae-ra, who donated her entire estate to the Yuhan Foundation. The ceremony is held to coincide with October 19, her birthday, to recognize the contributions of volunteers dedicated to nursing, education, welfare and pharmacy.
