Kim Eui-gyeom’s side (Kim is the Democratic Party’s floor secretary on the National Assembly’s Legislation and Judiciary Committee) said today, “Consultations on adopting the (confirmation hearing) report are continuing even during the parliamentary audit,” and that “the ruling and opposition parties’ floor secretaries are consulting on listing both favorable and unfavorable opinions.” It added that if the parties’ consultations are completed, they would adopt the confirmation hearing report even during the parliamentary audit period.
The ruling and opposition parties concluded Choi’s confirmation hearing before the National Assembly on the 18th of last month. But the confirmation hearing report has not been adopted, and the appointment by President Lee Jae-myung has remained on hold for a month.
Kim said, “Because special inspectors are required to be neutral and independent, efforts were made to secure adoption of a favorable opinion through an agreement between the ruling and opposition parties.” He added, “The differences had not narrowed while the opposition party did not agree with a favorable opinion.”
He explained, “On the 18th of last month, the day of the confirmation hearing, I proposed deliberations on adopting the report, but the opposition party’s position was, ‘We will not agree to adoption.’ At the plenary meeting on the 21st of last month, only the opposition party’s floor secretary attended, and remarks to the effect that they would not cooperate led to the adoption of the confirmation hearing report being postponed to the next meeting.”
Park Hyung-soo’s side, the People Power Party’s floor secretary on the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, immediately rebutted this, saying, “The claim that the People Power Party did not cooperate with adopting the report is untrue.”
Park’s side explained, “We clearly stated that we agreed to adopt the report with an ‘unfavorable opinion’ on nominee Choi Gil-soo included. We did not agree with a ‘favorable opinion’ on the nominee; we did not oppose adoption of the report itself.”
It went on to argue, “Blaming the People Power Party for the delay in processing the report simply because the Democratic Party did not agree to ‘adopting a favorable opinion through an agreement between the ruling and opposition parties’ is the height of hypocrisy. If the parties’ assessments differ, the report can be adopted with both favorable and unfavorable opinions listed.”
