[Financial News]  A poll released on the 19th found that President Lee Jae-myung’s approval rating for his performance of state affairs rebounded for the first time in three weeks, helped by an emphasis on livelihood policies and other factors.
According to a survey conducted by polling firm Realmeter at the request of Asia Economy from the 12th to the 16th among 2,520 voters aged 18 or older nationwide, positive assessments of Lee’s performance of state affairs stood at 37.3%, up 2.1 percentage points from the previous week. Negative assessments fell 1.0 point to 60.4%, while 2.3% said they did not know.
Lee’s approval rating has turned upward for the first time in three weeks. Realmeter analyzed, “The approval rating appears to have rebounded as the special measures against violent crime following the Incheon knife attack, along with an emphasis on livelihood policies concerning housing, jobs and finance, had a positive impact.” It said, however, that financial-market jitters following a sharp stock-market slump in the latter half of the week partly curtailed the increase.
By region, Incheon and Gyeonggi posted the largest gain, rising 6.0 percentage points to 39.0%. Daejeon, Sejong and Chungcheong rose 3.6 points to 37.3%, while Daegu and North Gyeongsang gained 2.8 points to 29.6%. Seoul was also up 2.1 points to 34.7%.
By age group, those aged 70 and older posted the largest gain, rising 8.1 percentage points to 39.8%. The figure was 41.8% among those in their 60s, up 3.6 points, and 39.2% among those in their 40s, up 1.9 points. Those in their 30s were the only group to decline, falling 3.3 points to 28.0%.
In the party support survey, the Democratic Party of Korea gained support while the People Power Party lost ground, narrowing the gap between the two parties.
In a survey conducted on the 15th and 16th among 1,005 voters aged 18 or older nationwide, the Democratic Party of Korea rose 0.7 percentage points from the previous week to 36.2%, while the People Power Party fell 0.4 points to 40.9%. The gap between the two parties was 4.7 points, remaining within the margin of error for the ninth consecutive week.
The Democratic Party of Korea gained 6.8 percentage points in Incheon and Gyeonggi and 5.2 points in Daegu and North Gyeongsang. The People Power Party fell 13.4 points in both Daegu and North Gyeongsang and among those aged 70 and older.
The Rebuilding Korea Party continued its upward trend for the third consecutive week, rising 0.6 percentage points to 6.9%. The Reform Party stood at 1.8%, the Progressive Party at 1.1%, and those without party affiliation at 11.1%.
The margin of error for the presidential job performance survey was ±2.0 percentage points at the 95% confidence level, and that for the party support survey was ±3.1 points. Both surveys were conducted using 100% wireless automated responses, and each had a response rate of 2.7%. For details, see the website of the Central Election Poll Deliberation Commission.
