[Financial News] A plan is being pursued to fully rebuild the aging buildings at Jeonnong Middle School in Seoul’s Dongdaemun District, merge it with nearby Jeonil Middle School, and reopen it in March 2032. Jeonnong Middle School will not be assigned incoming students starting with the 2027 academic year, and reconstruction is scheduled to begin in March 2029, after all current students have graduated.
The Eastern District Office of Education under the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education said on the 19th that, following an administrative notice, it had decided and announced on the 8th the “temporary closure of Jeonnong Middle School and non-assignment of incoming students.” Opened in 1968, Jeonnong Middle School plans to fully rebuild its buildings as part of a project to restructure aging school spaces.
The school merger is a measure to address the declining student population. The Eastern District Office of Education projected that after 2032, enrollment at Jeonnong Middle School and Jeonil Middle School would each fall to 300 students or fewer. The merged school is expected to have 25 classes and around 500 students.
The non-assignment of incoming students to Jeonnong Middle School will continue from the 2027 through the 2031 academic years. During this period, incoming middle-school students will be assigned to other middle schools in the school district, excluding Jeonnong Middle School. The Eastern District Office of Education plans to provide information through notices sent home by local elementary schools and neighborhood community service centers, among other channels, before applications for middle-school placement for the 2027 academic year are filled out.
Reconstruction will begin in March 2029, after all current students have graduated. Students will continue their studies at the existing school until they graduate. The education office plans to reopen the school in March 2032 after merging it with Jeonil Middle School, once construction is complete.
However, the merger of the two schools has not yet been finalized. The Eastern District Office of Education plans to gather the opinions of students, parents and local residents, and decide whether to proceed with the merger after completing relevant procedures, including an administrative notice.
