[The Financial News] Volkswagen’s high-performance hatchback, the Golf R, is returning to the domestic market after about 12 years. The eighth-generation Golf R delivers 333 horsepower and is distinguished by its powerful driving performance and advanced all-wheel-drive technology. Ahead of its official launch next year, Volkswagen Group Korea will preview the new model at nine showrooms nationwide as it moves to make inroads into the high-performance car market.
Volkswagen Group Korea said on the 19th that it will hold the “Golf R Roadshow 2026” at major showrooms nationwide from the 24th through Nov. 26.
The Golf R is returning to South Korea about 12 years after the seventh-generation model was launched in 2015. First introduced as the Golf R32 in 2002, the Golf R represents Volkswagen’s high-performance R brand and is distinguished by its powerful engine and concentrated driving technology.
The new Golf R, which is set to launch in South Korea, was developed based on the facelifted eighth-generation Golf. Its 2.0-liter turbocharged TSI gasoline engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DSG), delivering 333 horsepower. It is equipped with a Vehicle Dynamics Manager (VDM), which integrates control of the R-Performance Torque Vectoring-equipped 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system and Adaptive Chassis Control (DCC), among other systems, to enhance driving performance.
The roadshow will take place in sequence at nine showrooms operated by five authorized dealers nationwide. It will begin at Daechi in Seoul’s Gangnam district on the 24th and 25th, then continue through Suwon, Ilsan, Pangyo, Daejeon, Gwangju, Dongnae in Busan and Daegu, before wrapping up in Incheon from Nov. 24 to 26. Customers wishing to visit can reserve a showroom and time slot in advance through Naver.
Volkswagen Group Korea will give Golf R stickers to visitors and Golf Collection key tags to visitors who book in advance. Customers who place an advance order during the roadshow and take delivery of their vehicle will also receive an exclusive merchandise package and a chance to win prizes in a draw.
Shin Donghyup, executive director of marketing communications at Volkswagen Group Korea, said, “The Golf R is a signature model that most fully embodies Volkswagen’s high-performance DNA and technological expertise,” adding, “We organized this roadshow so customers across the country can experience firsthand what makes the Golf R special at a nearby showroom ahead of its official launch.”
