[Financial News] A U.S. resident found a pile of grenades believed to have been used during World War II while sorting through a box they had bought, prompting the police bomb squad to respond.
On the 19th, Yonhap News TV reported, citing UPI, that Austin police in Texas responded to a resident’s report on the 12th.
The resident had bought several boxes at an estate sale, where secondhand goods are sold. An estate sale is a secondhand sale in which household belongings are typically sold off all at once, usually because of a move or a death.
While sorting through the contents, they found old grenades believed to have been used during World War II and reported them to police.
The officers who arrived at the scene after receiving the report set up a perimeter and kept nearby residents away.
The Austin Police Department’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team determined that the grenades in the box could still explode, then safely collected them and removed them from the scene.
A police official explained, “With explosives that are 80 years old, their stability cannot be guaranteed, so handling them is itself dangerous and requires meticulous work,” adding, “This is not something that commonly happens at secondhand sales.”
The official added that the incident was not related to a crime.
Police urged people who find old military munitions such as grenades, artillery shells or mortar shells not to touch or move them, even if they look like unexploded ordnance, but to report them immediately and leave them to experts.
