[Financial News] An anonymous customer reportedly paid the several-hundred-thousand-won meal bill for a group of people with disabilities from a welfare facility at a restaurant they visited, then left without giving their name.
According to Yonhap News on the 19th, volunteer Kim Gwan-taek, 52, said he took part in the Cheongna Tour of the “Incheon City Tour” on the morning of the 15th, together with 27 people, including people with disabilities who use the Incheon Jemulpo-gu Hanmaeum General Welfare Center and staff members.
After enjoying an outing at the Dream Park Wildflower Complex at the Sudokwon Landfill Site and Cheongna Lake Park, they went to a large barbecue restaurant in Seohae-gu.
Kim, who joined the tour as a volunteer that day, said, “While we were busy arranging the meal with the social workers, a restaurant employee came over and quietly told us that a customer who had just left had paid the entire food bill.” He added, “I heard the customer had also ordered as many as seven servings of yukhoe.” The customer paid 600,000 won in total: the original meal bill of 410,000 won plus 190,000 won for the yukhoe.
The welfare center staff asked the restaurant what had happened so they could express their thanks, but the customer had already left after paying, without leaving any information.
Kim said, “It was disappointing that we couldn’t even learn the name of the person who did this good deed. I heard that, after seeing people from a welfare facility come in for a meal, the customer wanted to do something meaningful, and that they had lived in Hawaii, in the United States, before coming here.”
Moved by the kind act, the restaurant owner also gave the customer a bottle of wine.
In a phone interview with Yonhap News, the restaurant owner said, “I had only known the person as a customer who came to the restaurant from time to time. Seeing them show such kindness made me feel ashamed of myself and grateful.”
It was confirmed that the restaurant had earlier agreed to discount part of the bill after hearing that the welfare center was booking a group meal.
Kim said, “I’ve volunteered in the local community for a long time, but seeing someone do a good deed without any connection to us, as happened this time, was a special experience. I experienced a warm act I’ll never forget.”
He added, “What we received was not simply a meal, but a precious experience that made us realize there are still many people around us with warm hearts. I hope the gratitude of all 27 of us gets across.”
