The MCST said on the 19th that it would hold ‘2026 Hanbok Culture Week’ with the Korea Craft & Design Foundation from that day through the 25th. The event promotes the culture of wearing and enjoying hanbok in everyday life, with Hanbok Day, observed every October 21, at its center. It is in its ninth year.
The practice of wearing and enjoying hanbok, known as ‘hanbok living,’ was designated a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2022. It encompasses the culture of making hanbok, putting it on in the proper order, and enjoying it in connection with rituals, customs and play.
Hanbok wearers can get 50% off admission to Lotte World and 35% off admission to Seoul Sky from the 19th through the 31st. The National Gugak Center will offer a 50% discount on tickets to its ‘Saturday Premium Concert’ on the 24th.
At Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul, an exhibition will feature royal court hanbok and traditional hanbok seen in K-dramas, alongside a ‘Wear Hanbok Properly’ campaign. Namsangol Hanok Village will present ‘A Young Scholar’s School-Entry Ceremony’ on the 20th and 21st, based on the Joseon-era Crown Prince’s school-entry ceremony. In Daejeon, exhibitions, hands-on activities and educational programs will be held under the theme ‘Hanbok, Crossing the Line.’
Jeonju will offer hanbok accessory-making activities and a hanbok celebration, while South Jeolla Province will host exhibitions and hands-on activities featuring Boseong hemp and natural dyeing. Hanbok-wearing experiences and etiquette lessons will also take place at overseas hubs in Canada, Japan, Denmark and elsewhere.
A commemorative event will be held on the 21st at the Open Plaza of the National Museum of Korea. Under the theme ‘Hanbok Embracing Light,’ five brands—Geumuijae, SEODAMHWA, Silo Silk, Orimi and Hanboklin—will take part in a fashion show. Kim Yuna, vocalist of Jaurim, and the traditional performing arts group ‘Yeonhui Connect Ieul’ will perform.
At the awards ceremony, Kwon Young-sook, professor emerita at Pusan National University, will receive the Hanbok Culture Contribution Award; Lee Hye-mi, CEO of Saimdang by Lee Hye-mi, the Hanbok Person of the Year Award; and Jeong Hye-jin, CEO of Songhwa by Jeong, the Young Hanbok Person Award. The Human Resources Development Service of Korea (Global Institute of Transferring Skills) will receive the award for the institution that has adopted the most hanbok work uniforms, while designer Kim So-yeon will win the grand prize in the Hanbok Design Project Contest.
MCST Minister Choi Hwi-young said, “Hanbok is a precious cultural heritage that has accompanied our lives for a long time, as well as a cultural asset that continues to develop in new ways today.”
Some associated programs will also run before and after the event. Details of the schedule and participating venues are available on the official Hanbok Culture Week website.
