The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) will strengthen policy cooperation with Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City in culture, sports and tourism.
After attending the “2026 Month of Culture” commemorative event in Yeosu, Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, on the 17th, MCST Minister Choi Hwi-young met with Min Hyung-bae, mayor of the integrated special city, to hear about local issues and discuss ways to cooperate.
In the meeting, Mayor Min asked the MCST for attention and support for projects including the construction of a boat-racing venue in Gokseong County, the Asian Cultural Hub City Development Project, and the 109th National Sports Festival in 2028.
“To bring forward the era of 30 million inbound tourists, tourism demand must spread beyond the Seoul metropolitan area to regions across the country,” Minister Choi said. “I hope Jeonnam-Gwangju, with its sea, islands and rich cultural resources, will play a central role in revitalizing regional tourism.”
He also urged them to work on developing tourism content that reflects local characteristics and establishing the infrastructure needed for tourists to stay comfortably.
Meanwhile, the Culture Month commemorative events, themed “Yeosu’s Night Sea, a Voyage of Romance and Culture,” will be held through the 19th at the main venue of the World Island Exhibition Yeosu Korea, Yeosu Marine Park, Ungcheon Waterfront Park, Jangdo and other locations. The ceremony on the 17th featured a themed performance, celebratory performances by Seodo Band, Solar and Zion.T, and a fireworks show. Various cultural programs, including a marine street arts festival, a community culture festival and classical music performances, will continue throughout the event.
