[Financial News] Around 2,300 people took part in a running event organized by LG Uplus and the National Fire Agency to honor firefighters who died in the line of duty. Participants ran together wearing bibs bearing the names of firefighters who died in the line of duty and the dates they died, commemorating their sacrifice and dedication.
LG Uplus said on the 18th that it had held “U+119 Memorial Run 2026,” a memorial run for firefighters who died in the line of duty, with the National Fire Agency on the 17th around Sejong Central Park and the National Sejong Arboretum. Around 2,300 people took part, including members of the public, active-duty firefighters and bereaved families of firefighters who died in the line of duty.
Now in its second year, the event was organized to honor firefighters who died in the line of duty while protecting the lives and safety of the public, and to support firefighter families. Hong Beom-sik, CEO of LG Uplus, and company employees also ran alongside participants, honoring the fallen firefighters and conveying their support to firefighter families.
The event offered two courses: 11.9 km and 5 km. A total of 1,400 people took part in the 11.9-km course, while 600 joined the 5-km course, which was designed for running with family or friends. Participants ran wearing bibs bearing their own names as well as the names of firefighters who died in the line of duty and the dates they died. There was no competition for rankings or awards; the focus was on completing the course safely and commemorating the fallen.
Around 500 participants in last year’s inaugural event took part again this year. At least 1,000 active-duty firefighters applied, and 119 of them joined the event. LG Uplus also invited long-standing VIP customers and participants in its social media event.
An official memorial ceremony organized by the National Fire Agency was held after the run. The event venue also featured fire-safety experience booths, performances and programs for participants. After finishing the run, participants took part in the memorial ceremony and related activities to remember firefighters who died in the line of duty and express their gratitude to active-duty firefighters.
The 50,000-won entry fee paid by each participant will be used in full to support families of firefighters who died in the line of duty. Entry fees from last year’s event were also donated to Firefighter Families Hope Sharing, an organization for bereaved families of firefighters who died in the line of duty, and used for memorial activities and family support.
LG affiliates, including LG Household & Health Care and FarmHannong, as well as domestic companies such as CJ Foodville, Lingtea, Yungjin Pharm, Newcare, Dong-A Pharmaceutical and Trepion, sponsored the event.
LG Uplus plans to link “U+119 Memorial Run” with its “Simply. U+” campaign and expand it as a participatory social contribution initiative that remembers firefighters who died in the line of duty and supports their families.
Hong Beom-sik, CEO of LG Uplus, said, “Remembering the noble sacrifices of firefighters who devoted themselves to protecting the lives and safety of the public, and expressing our gratitude, is a responsibility we all share as a society.” He added, “We will continue to encourage firefighters and their families and work to foster a culture that respects and honors them.”
