【Financial News, Jeju = Reporter Jeong Yong-bok】 In Jeju, an active-duty coast guard officer personally teaches people how to wear life jackets and safety practices for preparing for maritime disasters, including ship accidents.
According to the Jeju Safety Experience Center on the 18th, it runs the “Special Ship Safety Experience with the Coast Guard” program in cooperation with the Jeju Regional Headquarters, Korea Coast Guard, every third Saturday of the month.
The program reflects Jeju’s regional characteristics, including the frequent use of maritime transport such as passenger ferries and the high level of marine activity. It aims to help residents and tourists understand the safety practices they need and respond to emergencies when accidents occur at sea.
The program incorporates the professional knowledge and field experience of active-duty coast guard officers into existing ship and typhoon safety experiences. Field experts take part in safety training to prepare for maritime disasters, including training on how to wear life jackets.
In ship safety training, it is important to learn what to do while waiting for rescue after an accident. Life jackets, in particular, are basic safety equipment that protect lives in the event of falling overboard or a ship accident. The core of the training is learning how to wear a life jacket correctly and developing the ability to respond calmly in an emergency.

The Jeju Safety Experience Center is a disaster safety education facility in Aewol-eup, Jeju City. It offers hands-on training to prepare for ship and aircraft accidents, natural disasters such as typhoons and earthquakes, and everyday safety accidents.
The center is also expanding special training programs in partnership with active-duty experts. It currently runs the “Special Aviation Safety Experience” every third Saturday of the month with Jeju Air cabin crew taking part, and has now added a ship safety experience program involving the Coast Guard.
Aircraft and ships are major means of transport connecting Jeju with other regions. Aircraft and ship accidents differ in factors such as evacuation space and rescue methods, making safety training that reflects the characteristics of each mode of transport necessary.
The Jeju Safety Experience Center plans to offer hands-on training that draws on the field experience of airline cabin crew and coast guard officers in their respective fields, and to expand cooperation with specialized institutions.
Kim Dae-hong, director of the Jeju Safety Experience Center, said, “I hope this special experience will give residents and tourists an opportunity to learn in a vivid, hands-on way how to respond to maritime disasters,” adding, “We will continue to expand a range of safety experience programs tailored to Jeju’s characteristics through cooperation with specialized institutions.”
