[Financial News] With Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) leader Kim Min-seok officially raising the prospect of pursuing the impeachment of Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae, People Power Party floor leader Chung Jeom-sik said, “We urge a swift decision on whether to pursue the chief justice’s impeachment.” He countered that if a motion to impeach Chief Justice Cho is introduced, “we will use every means to block it.”
Chung, the floor leader, held a press conference at the National Assembly on the 18th and said, “With the leader of the ruling party officially declaring that it will discuss pursuing the chief justice’s impeachment, the entire parliamentary audit is being sucked into an impeachment black hole.”
He criticized the government and ruling party, saying, “The reasons for the plunge in their approval ratings are the collapse of people’s livelihoods, diplomatic disarray, and disastrous personnel appointments.” He added, “But Kim has pulled out the impeachment card to rally his support base again amid the crisis they themselves caused.”
Chung, the floor leader, criticized the move, saying, “Rather than overcoming the crisis through policy and competence, they intend to use impeachment—an extraordinary measure that halts the normal functioning of state institutions—to turn around their approval ratings.” He called it “selfish political behavior that puts their factional interests ahead of the people and the country.”
He went on to stress, “The mere fact that the leader of the powerful ruling party has made official the push to impeach the chief justice gives the statement enormous repercussions, and it carries the weight of being virtually equivalent to introducing an impeachment motion.” He added, “Kim must take grave responsibility for the words he uttered.”
