【The Financial News, Chuncheon = Reporter Kim Gi-seop】Gangwon State’s future automotive industry, built on Hoengseong’s finished-vehicle testing complex and Wonju’s parts innovation center, will unveil a blueprint for growth that encompasses mobility services at the world’s largest intelligent transportation systems arena.
According to Gangwon Province on the 18th, the province will set up and operate the Gangwon State Pavilion (Gangwon Future Mobility Pavilion) at the 2026 Gangneung ITS World Congress, which will be held at Gangneung Olympic Park for five days from the 19th to the 23rd. The province’s Strategic Industries Division is organizing the pavilion with Hoengseong County and Gangwon Technopark. It plans to present its policies for fostering the future automotive industry, research and testing infrastructure, and business support programs to participating companies and visitors from Korea and abroad.
The ITS World Congress is the largest international event in the intelligent transportation systems sector, bringing together government officials, businesses, and experts from around the world to discuss future transportation technologies and policies. Held in rotation across Europe, the Americas, and the Asia-Pacific region, it is returning to Korea for the first time in 16 years since the 2010 event in Busan. This year’s congress will feature high-level meetings, academic sessions, exhibitions, technology demonstrations, and site visits, and is expected to draw large crowds, with global mobility companies and organizations taking part as exhibitors.

At the heart of the pavilion is the full-cycle support infrastructure for future mobility that the province has developed with support from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the National Police Agency, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT). It will highlight the development process and key achievements of the Hoengseong Future Mobility Research and Demonstration Complex, which handles finished-vehicle research and testing, and the Wonju Gangwon Future Mobility Innovation Center, which is responsible for parts development.
The province will also present its vision for a Gangwon-style future mobility ecosystem that combines the manufacturing and parts industries with advanced transportation technologies, such as the intelligent transportation systems being developed by Gangneung City, and mobility services in transportation and tourism. The strategy is to expand the future automotive industry beyond production into the realm of real-world mobility services and promote its growth potential in Korea and abroad. During the congress, the province plans to broaden its engagement with mobility companies and organizations from home and abroad and actively promote its investment appeal, with the aim of attracting businesses and fostering industrial cooperation.
Han Yeong-seon, head of Gangwon Province’s Industry Bureau, said, “This is an opportunity to show companies and experts from around the world, firsthand, the full-cycle support system for the future automotive industry that we have built around the Hoengseong testing complex and the Wonju innovation center.” He added, “We will combine our strengths in manufacturing and parts with intelligent transportation systems and tourism mobility services to develop Gangwon into a future mobility hub that attracts investment and businesses.”
