The late Kim Jin-seok, a fire sergeant who was deployed with the first-arriving team at a factory fire in Bucheon and died while fighting the blaze, was posthumously promoted one rank to fire lieutenant. On the 17th, the National Fire Agency said it plans to pursue the posthumous award of the Okjo Medal of the Order of Service Merit and support his burial at the National Cemetery.
Kim, a fire lieutenant with Bucheon Fire Station, was a member of the first crew to arrive at the scene of a fire at a metal injection-molding and printing factory in Nae-dong, Ojeong-gu, Bucheon, on the 16th. He became trapped inside the factory with a fellow firefighter while extinguishing the fire, and was rescued in cardiac arrest and taken to a hospital. Despite receiving treatment, Kim died at 12:55 a.m. on the 17th.
The National Fire Agency expressed its deep respect for the dedication of the late Fire Lieutenant Kim Jin-seok, who carried out his duty to the end in a dangerous setting to protect the lives and safety of the public, and conveyed its condolences and words of comfort to his bereaved family and fellow fire service personnel.
The funeral will be held as a Gyeonggi provincial government funeral. A Gyeonggi Province official said, "At the family's request, we decided to hold a provincial government funeral." The funeral service will be held at Bucheon Indoor Gymnasium at 10 a.m. on the 19th.
A visitation room will be set up at the funeral hall of Soonchunhyang University Bucheon Hospital. A memorial altar at Urban Festival Plaza in Sejong Central Park will receive visitors wishing to pay their respects from 2 p.m. on the 17th until the funeral service ends.
