【Financial News Jeju = Jeong Yong-bok, staff reporter】 Rain and strong winds are forecast in Jeju, where the 107th National Sports Festival is underway, starting Sunday, the 18th. Up to 60 mm of rain is expected through the daytime on the 19th, and waves may reach 3 m, so athletes, their families and spectators should take care when traveling to venues and using marine transport.
According to the Jeju Regional Meteorological Office on the 17th, Jeju will be partly cloudy at times today, but rain is expected to begin early on the 18th. It is forecast to start in the mountainous areas in the early hours of the 18th and gradually spread to other parts of the island from daytime through late at night.
Rain is also expected to continue in some places from the early hours through the daytime on the 19th. The forecast rainfall from early on the 18th through the daytime on the 19th is 10–60 mm across Jeju. Rainfall amounts and the timing of the rain are expected to vary by area.
With the weather set to change over the event’s first weekend, people should watch for changing conditions at outdoor venues and in the areas around them. Strong winds could also affect safety management at outdoor facilities and temporary structures.
The 107th National Sports Festival opened the previous day at Jeju World Cup Stadium. A total of 30,599 athletes, officials and others from 17 cities and provinces across the country and overseas Korean sports organizations are taking part, with competitors vying in 50 sports through the 22nd.
There are 74 venues in all: 68 in Jeju and six outside the province. As outdoor sports such as soccer, baseball, track and field, and archery are also being held in Jeju, delegations should check the weather conditions at each venue.

Winds are also expected to strengthen along with the rain. On the 18th, winds of 9–15 m/s are forecast over the waters off southern, eastern and western Jeju, with waves reaching 1.5–3 m. Waves of 1–2.5 m are also expected off northern Jeju.
Waves off Jeju are forecast to reach up to 3 m on the 19th as well. Ferry passengers traveling between Jeju and other regions are advised to check marine weather information and each operator’s service status before departure.
Temperatures will also change. The high on the 17th is expected to be 25–27°C, above the seasonal average of 21.1–23.2°C. The high on the 18th will also rise to 26–27°C, but is forecast to fall to 22–24°C on the 19th, when rain is expected to continue. The low is expected to be 21–22°C on the morning of the 18th and 19–20°C on the 19th.
There is also a possibility that rain will continue during the National Sports Festival. The Korea Meteorological Administration forecast generally cloudy skies on the 20th, with rain returning to parts of Jeju from the afternoon through the evening.
The National Sports Festival is being held in Jeju for the first time in 12 years, since 2014. With athletes, their families and spectators visiting from across the country, weather conditions in Jeju could be an important factor not only for running the events but also for travel and sightseeing plans.
