[Financial News] The Institute for International Maritime Affairs at Korea Maritime & Ocean University (KMOU), headed by Director Jeong Mun-su, said on the 16th that it had recently discussed joint cooperation measures with Dalian Maritime University for the Arctic shipping era and agreed to establish an ongoing cooperation framework.
The discussions took place during a meeting between the Institute for International Maritime Affairs and Dalian Maritime University's vice president and director of international exchange, held ahead of a seminar by Lim Ki-tack, Honorary Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), at the Chinese university on the 9th.
At the meeting, the two sides held wide-ranging discussions on academic exchange to prepare for the Arctic shipping era. The two universities agreed to continue exchanges and cooperation, including visits to training ships, and to build on their cooperation to further strengthen collaboration in the maritime sector. They also agreed on the need to work together through the International Association of Maritime Universities and contribute to the development of the global maritime sector.
The two sides also agreed on the need for commemorative initiatives and cooperation involving Busan City, Dalian City and the two universities, given that next year marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and China.
At the joint seminar that followed, Lim Ki-tack, Honorary Secretary-General of the IMO, delivered a special lecture to Dalian Maritime University students on “Pioneering Arctic Shipping Routes through Korea-China Cooperation and the IMO's Environmental Policy.”
The Institute for International Maritime Affairs plans to build on the meeting and seminar to develop concrete academic exchanges with Dalian Maritime University, including a training ship's port call and a symposium in November, as well as cooperation among experts on Arctic shipping routes. It also plans to lay the groundwork for Korea-China maritime cooperation in preparation for the Arctic shipping era through a regular cooperation network.
Director Jeong said, “At the symposium to be held in November to coincide with Dalian Maritime University's training ship calling at Korea Maritime & Ocean University, the institute's endowed professors will give lectures, and we also plan to hold a roundtable discussion. We plan to maintain a regular cooperation network every year, including by recommending Arctic shipping route experts, and will pursue cooperation in Arctic-related fields in December as well.”
