[Financial News] Busan’s first international school approved by the education authorities, Royal Russell School Busan Campus, backed by the British royal family, is set to break ground.
Busan Metropolitan City announced on the 16th that Royal Russell School Busan Campus, the first foreign educational institution in the southeastern region, will begin full-scale construction on the 19th.
Construction is getting underway after key approval procedures, including the announcement of an amended implementation plan and the building permit, were completed without a hitch in February. The city has coordinated with relevant agencies, including the Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority and Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH), through a dedicated team to ensure smooth permitting and design processes.
Scheduled to open in August 2028, Royal Russell School Busan Campus will be built with a total project budget of 174.9 billion won. The campus will comprise six buildings, with one basement level and four above-ground floors, and have a total floor area of 19,286 square meters.
The proven academic management system and core curriculum of the UK’s prestigious Royal Russell School, which boasts a tradition spanning more than 170 years, will also be applied at the Busan campus. This will allow students to experience firsthand in Busan an education on par with that at the school’s UK campus.
The school plans to accommodate approximately 1,350 students through an integrated curriculum spanning kindergarten, elementary school and middle school. A high school will be added later.
The Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority has also amended and announced the implementation plan to enable a children’s English library to be built on the “Public Office Building 3” site. The plan is to create an optimal foreign-language learning environment linked with Royal Russell School.
The city expects the campus to serve as key settlement infrastructure that helps outstanding overseas companies and global talent put down roots in the region, and to propel western Busan into a central hub for nurturing future talent.
Mayor Jeon Jae-su said, “Breaking ground on Royal Russell School Busan Campus is a meaningful first step toward establishing a global education foundation to support the future of Busan, the maritime capital. The relevant agencies will continue to work together as one team to press ahead with construction and preparations for the opening, and I will closely oversee the process to ensure the school opens without a hitch.”
