[Financial News] An elementary school second-grader was struck and killed by an SUV making a right turn while the student was crossing a crosswalk in a school zone in Miryang, South Gyeongsang Province.
According to the Miryang Police Station on the 16th, at around 4:03 p.m. on the 15th, an Actyon SUV driven by a man in his late 70s, identified as B, struck A, a 7-year-old elementary school student, on a school-zone road near the Miryang Chamber of Commerce in Sammun-dong, Miryang.
At the time of the accident, A was crossing a crosswalk without traffic lights, and B is believed to have struck A while making a right turn at an intersection where the yellow signal was flashing.
A was rushed to a nearby hospital immediately after the accident and received treatment, but ultimately died at around 5:16 p.m., about an hour and 10 minutes later.
Police confirmed that B was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. They believe B caused the accident after failing to notice A crossing the road while making a right turn at the intersection.
Police booked B on suspicion of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Crimes (causing death in a child protection zone). Since the accident occurred in a school zone, they plan to investigate its exact circumstances closely, including whether B complied with the speed limit (30 km/h) and fulfilled his duty to keep a proper lookout ahead.
