[Financial News] Kwangwoon University is expanding its efforts to train global engineering talent in advanced technology fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors and robotics by joining forces with three leading universities in Qingdao, Shandong Province, China.
Kwangwoon University said on the 16th that a delegation including President Yoon Do-young visited Qingdao University, Qingdao University of Science and Technology, and Qingdao University of Technology, all located in Qingdao, China, from the 8th to the 9th to review the status of Chinese-foreign cooperative education programs and discuss ways to cooperate.
The most notable outcome of the visit was the official launch of a new undergraduate program in electronic information engineering. On the 9th, Kwangwoon University held an entrance ceremony for the first cohort of students in the Chinese-foreign cooperative education program in electronic information engineering, which had received formal approval from China’s Ministry of Education, at Qingdao University’s Fushan Campus. At a joint management committee meeting held immediately after the ceremony, the presidents of the two universities signed a financial implementation agreement, laying the foundation for the program’s stable operation.
Kwangwoon University is also pursuing the establishment of a master’s program to train highly skilled talent who will lead future advanced industries. On the same day, the university visited Qingdao University of Science and Technology and shared updates on a Chinese-foreign cooperative master’s program in applied artificial intelligence (AI). The program is currently awaiting final approval from China’s Ministry of Education, and the two universities agreed to expand joint research and talent development across advanced technology fields, including AI, robotics and semiconductors, once approval is granted.
The visit also yielded progress in strengthening existing education programs. On the 8th, Kwangwoon University visited Qingdao University of Technology, with which it has collaborated since 2006, to mark the 20th anniversary of its architecture education program. With the intake set to increase from 80 to 120 students starting with the incoming class for the 2026 academic year, the university explored medium- and long-term development plans, including expanding educational facilities and strengthening pathways from undergraduate to graduate study.
Yoon Do-young, president of Kwangwoon University, said, “Building on this visit to three universities in Qingdao, we will strengthen existing education programs while expanding the scope of international education cooperation through the launch of a new undergraduate program and the development of a master’s program,” adding, “Drawing on the university’s education and research capabilities in advanced engineering fields such as AI, robotics and semiconductors, we will strengthen systems for jointly developing talent with overseas universities and work to train engineering talent with global competitiveness.”
