[Financial News] Kookmin University held a ceremony marking its 80th anniversary on the 16th at the academic conference hall in its main building in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, and declared a leap toward a new 100 years through the development of future advanced industries such as artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum technology, and educational innovation that breaks down boundaries between majors.
Around 300 people, including President Jeong Seung-ryeol, faculty, staff, students and alumni, attended the event, looking back on the university’s achievements over the past 80 years and sharing views on its future development.
In his commemorative address, President Jeong Seung-ryeol said, "Eighty years ago, the founders of Kookmin University established the university for the future of the nation, and Sungkok Kim Seong-gon helped it embark on a new path of development based on entrepreneurship and pragmatism." He added, "Let us move forward as a university that pioneers paths others have not taken, solves social problems with new technologies and knowledge, and fulfills its responsibility to future generations."
Kookmin University plans to accelerate its institutional transformation and specialization in future industries as it marks its 80th anniversary. Building on its existing strengths in design and automobiles, it is focusing on developing advanced technology fields such as quantum technology, AI and biotechnology.
Change is also underway in education. Kookmin University is building a 'boundary-free educational ecosystem' by greatly expanding students’ freedom to choose their majors and breaking down boundaries between academic disciplines. To this end, it is improving its systems for changing majors and transferring between departments, and is running a range of hands-on educational programs that allow students to explore career paths while solving real-world problems.
At the ceremony, a report on the university’s history and presentations on major commemorative projects were delivered in a video produced using AI technology, drawing attention. The university also presented major awards for contributions to its development to faculty and staff, alumni, and students.
To mark its 80th anniversary, Kookmin University is continuing to hold cultural events for its members and the local community to enjoy together. Following a history photo exhibition and an art fair by the College of Fine Arts currently underway on campus, the university plans to hold a commemorative concert at Lotte Concert Hall on the 19th and a range of celebratory events, including dance performances, from the 20th.
