[Financial News] Korea Aerospace University said on the 16th that it had awarded an honorary doctorate in business administration to James Kim, chairman and CEO of the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM). The degree recognizes his contributions to advancing economic cooperation between Korea and the United States and serving as a private-sector bridge between academia and industry.
Korea Aerospace University praised James Kim for drawing on his experience leading global companies to connect the governments and businesses of the two countries and promote domestic investment, regulatory easing, and cooperation in advanced industries.
In July 2017, James Kim became the first Korean American to take office as AMCHAM chairman and CEO. Since then, he has led AMCHAM, which has some 800 member companies, and actively supported efforts to expand trade and investment between the two countries. He previously served as president of Yahoo Korea, Microsoft Korea, and GM Korea, among other roles, and currently serves as chairman of the board of Mirae Asset Global Investments and as an independent director of Hyundai Mobis.
The degree ceremony, held on campus on the 15th, was attended by Korea Aerospace University President Hee-young Huh, Korean Air Vice President Seong-hyeon Jang, faculty and staff, among others. Before the event, a tree-planting ceremony and the unveiling of a commemorative marker were held in front of the Aerospace Center to mark the university visit and the conferral of the degree.
In his welcoming remarks, President Hee-young Huh said, "Chairman James Kim is someone who has connected the two countries and broadened exchanges on the front lines of Korean-U.S. economic cooperation and trade diplomacy. We are grateful for the special attention and support he has given the university, including providing internship opportunities for students, and it is an honor to welcome Chairman Kim as an alumnus of our university."
In his congratulatory remarks, Korean Air Vice President Seong-hyeon Jang said, "As a longtime friend and mentor, I sincerely congratulate him on receiving this honorary doctorate. It is a meaningful honor befitting the dedication and contributions he has shown over the years."
James Kim said, "It is a great honor to receive an honorary doctorate from Korea Aerospace University, which has led the way in cultivating talent for Korea's aerospace and defense industries. I will continue to support students' growth through internship programs and ongoing scholarship support, and expand opportunities for universities, businesses, and local communities to grow together."
