【Financial News, Gangneung = Reporter Kim Gi-seop】Gangneung Speed Skating Stadium, the main exhibition venue for the 2026 Gangneung ITS World Congress, which will draw participants from more than 90 countries worldwide, has completed preliminary inspections covering fire safety, counterterrorism, and electrical and gas systems and is ready to welcome visitors.
According to Gangwon Development Corporation on the 16th, it completed a special fire safety inspection, a joint counterterrorism inspection, and electrical and gas safety inspections in the area around the stadium ahead of the congress, which opens on the 19th. The stadium is a facility the corporation operates under contract from Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, and more than 430 exhibition booths will be set up there during the congress.
The ITS World Congress is an international event where technologies and policies in intelligent transportation systems (ITS) are shared and the future direction of transportation is discussed. Co-hosted by Gangneung City and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, this congress will run for five days through the 23rd at and around Gangneung Olympic Park, and about 60,000 people are expected to attend. At the speed skating stadium, 108 domestic and international organizations and companies will showcase cutting-edge transportation technologies, including autonomous driving and artificial intelligence (AI).
The corporation plans to regularly inspect the stadium’s key facilities and safety management throughout the event. Taking into account the nature of an exhibition venue where large crowds gather at once, it will operate an on-site-focused safety management system so participants and visitors can view the exhibitions without inconvenience.
Kim Tae-heon, president of Gangwon Development Corporation, said, “Given that participants from more than 90 countries and tens of thousands of visitors will gather at once, we have devoted considerable effort to checking everything in advance, from fire safety and counterterrorism to electricity and gas.” He added, “I will personally monitor safety conditions throughout the exhibition venue until the congress ends and help ensure that the international event in Gangneung concludes without incident.”
