[Financial News] Global cosmetics ODM company COSMAX is turning waste generated at its research facilities into works of art.
According to COSMAX on the 15th, the company signed an MOU with upcycling social venture Market Balgyeon to pursue an upcycling project.
Under the agreement, COSMAX will identify, collect and provide waste materials from its research institute. Market Balgyeon will make upcycled products and artworks and develop educational content. The two companies will also pursue social contribution activities, including hands-on programs.
In the process of developing more than 8,000 new products annually, COSMAX’s Research & Innovation (R&I) Center generates research consumables such as laboratory containers, bulk containers for raw materials, aprons and lab coats.
At an art fair held ahead of the agreement, artworks and installations made from researchers’ aprons, lab coats and other items were exhibited. A free class was also held on making lights from discarded plastic containers and paper shopping bags.
COSMAX plans to regularly provide waste materials for upcycling education and art activities at schools and institutions, and to expand resource-circulation efforts across all areas of the company, including research, manufacturing and office operations. It is also reviewing environmental management initiatives with its clients.
The project is part of the open innovation support program run by the Gyeonggi Social Economy Institute, which COSMAX has participated in since last year.
A COSMAX representative said, “Starting with this collaboration, we will expand resource-circulation activities across all areas of our business and build a sustainable cosmetics ecosystem together with the local community.”
