[Financial News] “Oh (Oh), my God!”
Leading German media outlets all came out with exclamations playing on the name of the Korean striker. They were praising Hyeon-gyu Oh (25, Beşiktaş), who delivered a perfect one-man show with two goals and an assist in the heart of Germany, on enemy territory.
On the 16th (Korea time), Hyeon-gyu Oh featured in Beşiktaş’s away game against Hoffenheim in the second match of the 2026–27 UEFA Europa League league phase, held in Sinsheim, Germany. He scored twice and provided an assist to lead his team to a 3–2 victory.
The day’s win was entirely down to Hyeon-gyu Oh. After the first half ended 0–0, the second half was truly the “Hyeon-gyu Oh show.” He got off to a fine start by setting up Michael Amir Murillo’s opener in the 15th minute of the second half. Then, when Hoffenheim pulled level through Fisnik Asllani in the 23rd minute, Oh stepped up to finish the job himself.

In the 27th minute of the second half, during a fast Beşiktaş counterattack, Oh took advantage of the defense breaking down and found himself one-on-one with opposing goalkeeper Oliver Baumann. He kept his composure and found the back of the net. Buoyed by the goal, Oh struck again just seven minutes later, in the 34th minute, completing his brace in a flash and extending the lead to 3–1. Hoffenheim pulled one back late in the game, but it was not enough to turn the match around.
German media expressed their amazement at Hyeon-gyu Oh’s outstanding performance with witty wordplay. Bild, Germany’s biggest tabloid, ran the headline “Oh weia, Hoffenheim!” immediately after the match. It combined the German exclamation “O weia” (“Oh my God”), which expresses astonishment, with Oh’s surname to allude to Hoffenheim’s disastrous situation. Bild named Oh “Der Mann des Abends” (“the man of the evening”).
Other outlets were just as enthusiastic. German news channel NTV lavished direct praise on his performance, as he found the net twice, with the headline “Oh und Oh schießt Hoffenheim k.o.” (“Oh and Oh knock Hoffenheim out”). Public broadcaster ZDF also focused on Oh’s brace with the headline “Zwei Mal Oh” (“Twice Oh”).
Beşiktaş also continued its strong start, winning both of its first two Europa League matches. Turkish media were unanimous in praising him, calling it the “Hyeon-gyu Oh show in Germany” and hailing “Hyeon-gyu Oh, the hero of the match.”
Despite playing away, around 17,000 Beşiktaş fans turned out and created an atmosphere like a home stadium. In a post-match interview, Hyeon-gyu Oh said emotionally, “It was a really crazy match. As long as the fans believe in me, I’ll keep fighting and give it my best.” His lightning-fast brace over seven minutes completely shifted the momentum right after Hoffenheim had equalized. The night in Sinsheim, Germany, was entirely defined by Hyeon-gyu Oh.
