[Financial News] A video filmed by a delivery driver has revealed the kitchen of a delivery-only restaurant in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul, covered in trash and grease, sparking debate over hygiene at restaurants that offer delivery only and have no dine-in area.
Cooking without a hat in a kitchen caked in grease
On the 14th, a post appeared on the online community Threads alongside a video lasting about five seconds. It read, “While working as a delivery gig worker, this was by far the filthiest delivery restaurant I’d ever seen.”
The video showed the inside of a kitchen, with a cooking counter and a stainless-steel worktable beneath a range hood. A rice cooker and a scale sat on the worktable, while torn plastic packaging, cardboard boxes and sauce containers were strewn across the floor.
A man wearing black shorts was working amid the trash, barefoot in slippers. At the back of the restaurant, a cardboard box full of packaging and plastic sat beside a fan, while torn-open bags lay scattered across the floor.
The delivery driver who posted the video, identified as A, wrote, “The bags have phrases like ‘a family eats this’ on them, but would they really serve food like this to their own family?” A added, “I run a business too, but this was by far the filthiest delivery restaurant I’d ever seen.”
A said, “The owner hadn’t even washed their hair, was wearing slippers and no hat, and the whole area around the gas burners was yellow with grease.” A added, “The rice cooker lid was open, and the rice was yellow. The air conditioner was covered in grease, and the white fan had turned black.”
A went on, “The worst part was inside the restaurant. There was so much trash that you’d wonder, ‘Is this really a place where food is made?’” He added, “There was even a folding bed at the very back that had turned black.”
A said the restaurant was in Yeongdeungpo but did not disclose its name. In response to a comment urging him to report it, A replied, “I’ll file a report with Safety e-Report.”
Calls for delivery drivers to report such places, alongside concerns that blanket criticism could harm small business owners
People who watched the video reacted with comments such as, “Even the sidewalk would be cleaner,” “I can’t tell what’s trash and what’s an ingredient,” “Customers never get to see inside delivery-only restaurants, so I hope delivery drivers make sure to report places like this,” and “There are plenty of places worse than this.”
Others said, “I check the business name and owner’s name and even look at Street View before ordering delivery” and “Even if the reviews are good, I don’t order from restaurants that only offer delivery and have no dine-in area.” Advice also poured in to avoid so-called “shop-in-shop” restaurants, where the business name registered on a delivery app differs from the store name.
Some, however, said it was excessive to condemn all delivery-only restaurants. One netizen who said they ran a delivery-only restaurant posted a photo of their kitchen, saying, “I’m working really hard because I don’t want people to get the wrong impression like this.”
