[The Financial News] President Lee Jae-myung approved the appointment of Kim Ji-yong, nominee to head the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency, on the 15th.
Senior Presidential Spokesperson Kang Yoo-jung said in a press notice that day that President Lee had approved the appointment of nominee Kim, whose confirmation hearing report had been adopted.
Earlier that day, the National Assembly Public Administration and Security Committee approved the confirmation hearing report on Kim by agreement between the ruling and opposition parties at a full committee meeting. The vote came 13 days after the appointment hearing request was submitted to the National Assembly. The report was said to include both favorable and unfavorable assessments.
At the confirmation hearing held the previous day, not only opposition lawmakers but also some Democratic Party lawmakers said Kim was unfit to head the agency. The Rebuilding Korea Party also formally adopted opposition to his appointment as its official party position that day.
By contrast, the pro-Lee faction within the Democratic Party and others supported his appointment, describing Kim as a “principled anti-Yoon figure.”
Senior Presidential Secretary for Public Relations and Communication Sung Ki-hong said that day on CBS Radio’s “Park Seong-tae’s News Show,” “It is true that there are various opposing views about him. But given his expertise, the path he has taken, and his commitment to reforming the prosecution, as reflected in what he has said about ‘how to lead the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency,’ I believe the National Assembly standing committee will make an appropriate decision on adopting the hearing report.”
