Three years of medication alone will cost 60 million won... ‘Miracle of Autumn,’ helping Chae-won, airs on the 16th

[Financial News] A fundraising broadcast will be held to help a 13-year-old child with neurofibromatosis receive treatment with a new drug and undergo surgery. It will tell the story of Chae-won, who has a chance to receive treatment that can slow the tumors’ progression but is struggling with the burden of medical costs that will continue for years.
According to the Milal Welfare Foundation on the 15th, Part 1 of ‘Miracle of Autumn,’ jointly planned by the foundation and MBC, will air at 6:05 p.m. on the 16th. The program will revisit Chae-won’s treatment since the child was featured in ‘Miracle of Spring’ in April and raise funds to support it.
Chae-won has had cerebral infarction and cerebral palsy since birth and was later diagnosed with multiple neurofibromas. The tumors, which grow along the nerves, are concentrated especially in the face. The foundation says that as the tumors grow, Chae-won’s vision is deteriorating and the child’s life is even at risk. Neurofibromatosis is a disease with symptoms that vary by type and age, and requires regular specialist care and coordination among multiple medical departments.
After undergoing detailed tests recently, Chae-won was selected to receive a new drug that can slow the tumors’ progression. The foundation estimates that the medication will cost at least 20 million won a year, even with National Health Insurance coverage. Treatment will be needed for at least three years, and the new drug alone is expected to cost around 60 million won. Chae-won will also need surgery to remove the tumors afterward.
Viewers offered help following the broadcast in April, but financial difficulties continue amid the prolonged treatment. Donations raised through this broadcast will be channeled through the foundation to cover Chae-won’s medical expenses, including the new-drug treatment and surgery.
The hosts, singers Son Bin-a and Jeon Yu-jin, will perform in support of Chae-won. Actor Yoo Sun, who is co-hosting the program, said, “I sincerely hope that many people will continue to show their warm love so that Chae-won, having reached the threshold of treatment, does not miss this precious opportunity because of financial circumstances.”
