[Financial News] Financial authorities held an emergency review meeting with relevant institutions in response to the recent sharp stock market decline, assessing market conditions and investor flows. They said they would make advance preparations so that a contingency plan could be implemented swiftly if market unease continued.
The FSC said it had held an “Emergency Meeting to Review Stock Market Conditions” on the afternoon of the 15th, chaired by Financial Services Commission Chairman Lee Eok-won and attended by officials from relevant institutions, including the Financial Supervisory Service and Korea Exchange, as well as market experts.
At the meeting, participants reviewed domestic stock market trends and the flow of foreign and institutional investment amid rising expectations of U.S. interest rate hikes, uncertainty surrounding the artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure industry, and higher international oil prices, and discussed future response measures.
Participants assessed that although domestic and global macroeconomic conditions had heightened stock market volatility, the market appeared to have overreacted to some extent in terms of the pace of the decline and market flows. They said that major domestic industries, including semiconductors, defense and shipbuilding, were delivering solid results on the strength of their global competitiveness, and that economic fundamentals—including foreign exchange reserves, the current account and the soundness of financial institutions—remained strong.
They also agreed that, while remaining alert to increased market volatility, it was important to guard against excessive anxiety spreading and abrupt herd behavior. They urged investors to make rational investment decisions, taking into account companies’ intrinsic value and medium- to long-term growth potential.
Financial authorities and relevant institutions said they would closely monitor domestic and international market trends and investment flows. They plan to take a strict, zero-tolerance approach to market-disrupting activities, including spreading false rumors that exploit market unease, market manipulation and illegal short selling.
Chairman Lee stressed, “Please remain alert even to small market fluctuations and take active steps to ensure financial market stability and protect investors,” adding, “Investing with excessive reliance on debt and credit is risky, and risk management is all the more important at times like these.”
He added, urging financial companies to “refrain from indiscriminate credit provision and do their utmost to protect customers and manage risk.”
