[Financial News] The Korean Meteorological Administration provides weather data, including solar irradiance and wind conditions, for Korea Electric Power Corporation’s forecasts of solar and wind power generation. KEPCO plans to develop a forecasting model using the data and gradually replace its existing model based on overseas weather data.
The Korean Meteorological Administration held a ‘Technology Exchange Meeting to Strengthen Cooperation on Meteorology-Power Convergence Technologies’ with KEPCO at Government Complex Daejeon on the 15th, where they discussed the progress of power generation forecasting technology and ways to expand cooperation. The aim is to help ensure stable power operations by anticipating changes in generation caused by weather.
Since last September, the Korean Meteorological Administration has been providing hourly forecasts of solar irradiance, wind direction and speed, cloud cover, and other conditions, generated by the Korean numerical weather prediction model. Its regional model, with a 3-km grid, forecasts up to five days ahead, while its local model, with a 1-km grid, forecasts up to two days ahead. KEPCO is developing a power generation forecasting model by linking these data in real time and plans to introduce it after validation.
The Korean Meteorological Administration plans to improve forecast accuracy by incorporating recent observations of solar irradiance and wind and improving how its numerical models perform calculations. It will also apply a local ensemble model that combines the results of 13 individual forecasting models, as well as AI-based correction technology.
The two agencies renewed last June the memorandum of understanding they first signed in 2022. They plan to broaden their cooperation beyond renewable energy generation to include power demand forecasting and risk analysis near power facilities.
