【The Financial News, Chuncheon = Kim Gi-seop, staff writer】Gangwon Province set up a table for investment-attraction talks at an exhibition venue where domestic semiconductor companies had gathered and mounted a drive to attract firms from the Seoul metropolitan area.
According to Gangwon Province, the province held a second-half meeting of its Semiconductor Company Investment Attraction Working-Level Council at this year’s Semiconductor Exhibition at Seoul COEX on the 15th. The council is made up primarily of practitioners from the province’s and cities’ investment-attraction teams, Gangwon Technopark, and private-sector experts in the fields of economics, investment and semiconductors. The meeting was held in conjunction with the province’s semiconductor promotional pavilion at the country’s largest specialized semiconductor exhibition.
The meeting covered the latest developments, including investment status and progress in discussions on new investments by nine semiconductor companies that have signed investment agreements with the province since 2023. Participants also discussed ways to identify promising companies through participation in the exhibition and tailor-made strategies to attract firms by linking them with region-specific industries and infrastructure.
After the meeting, close-up, on-site efforts to attract companies continued. The province directly explained the status of efforts to develop a Gangwon-style semiconductor industry, the region’s locational advantages and investment incentives to materials, components and equipment companies and fabless firms visiting the promotional pavilion, as well as representatives of companies with their own booths at the exhibition.
Hwang Seong-hyeon, head of Gangwon Province’s Semiconductor Industry Division, said, “By holding a meeting at an exhibition venue where companies gather in person, we were able to get an immediate read on industry trends on the ground.” He added, “While ensuring that investments by the nine companies with which we have already signed agreements proceed without a hitch, we will seek out new companies aligned with region-specific industries and establish a semiconductor ecosystem in Gangwon Province.”
