[Financial News] Amid growing concerns about hacking driven by artificial intelligence (AI), the Ministry of Science and ICT said it is pursuing a system that would use white-hat hackers to respond.
At a parliamentary audit conducted by the National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee in Yeouido, Seoul, on the 15th, Choi Woo-hyuk, head of the Ministry of Science and ICT's Information Security and Network Policy Office, said, "AI hacking differs from conventional hacking in that it is carried out automatically, simultaneously across multiple fronts, and in a very short time."
Choi said, "White-hat hackers are currently legally barred from hacking, but a pilot project is underway to let them try attacking anyone and identify vulnerabilities," adding, "We will institutionalize this afterward."
Choi also said, "AI hacking moves so quickly that it is difficult to respond. We will use an AI-based incident response system to reduce the time needed to investigate hacking damage to one-third or less." The system is designed to shorten investigation times.
However, he explained that the Ministry of Science and ICT's project to develop a specialized AI foundation model for cybersecurity would be available for use next year.
Choi added, "We will make use of the specialized AI foundation model project next year, and are also using frontier models," and said, "We will continue providing budget support to small and medium-sized enterprises vulnerable to hacking."
