[Financial News] President Lee Jae-myung said on the 15th, “Tomorrow marks the 500th day since our Popular Sovereignty Government took office. South Korea stands at a crossroads in a major transformation,” and stressed, “At times like this, we must adopt an even humbler attitude, heed the will of the people, work to improve their lives and do our utmost to open a brighter future for the nation.”
At the Senior Presidential Aides Meeting he chaired at Cheong Wa Dae that day, President Lee said the government must focus its resources on housing, jobs and finance—the foundations of people’s livelihoods—and made these remarks.
President Lee said, “Our economy is currently achieving remarkable results in many areas. At this rate, South Korea is likely to become the sixth country in the world among those with populations of 50 million or more to surpass $40,000 in national income this year.” However, he noted, “Despite the strong performance of key indicators, the recovery in people’s livelihoods is slower than they would hope.”
He continued, “People do not seem to feel that the difficulties of daily life have improved significantly. It is time to make all-out efforts to ensure that the performance of the national economy as a whole translates into tangible results in each person’s life,” and said, “We should accelerate housing supply to meet actual demand at each stage of life and quickly implement a national jobs project encompassing plans to create jobs in both the private and public sectors.”
He also called on officials to pay particular attention to providing policy funds, supporting interest rate cuts and offering tailored debt restructuring, so that people can wisely weather the rising tide of interest rates.
President Lee said, “For the remainder of this year, Cheong Wa Dae and the government should make these three key social policy areas their top priorities and ensure that initiatives in each area are carried out thoroughly,” and urged them, “Please do your utmost to ensure that the benefits of growth are spread evenly throughout our society. Expanding existing policies is important, but I hope you will also identify new ones.”
