[Financial News] President Lee Jae-myung said on the 15th, regarding the inclusion of the spirit of the Buma Democratic Uprising and the May 18 Democratization Movement in the Constitution’s preamble, “Now is the time to put it into practice through action, not words.”
At the 49th Senior Secretaries and Aides Meeting, chaired by the president and held that day at the main building of the Blue House, President Lee said, “There is unanimous agreement across party lines that the May 18 Democratization Movement and the Buma Democratic Uprising should be enshrined in the Constitution’s preamble.”
A day before the 47th anniversary of the Buma Democratic Uprising, President Lee emphasized, “The Buma Democratic Uprising, which powerfully upheld the principle of popular sovereignty, is a proud part of the history that, together with the May 18 Democratization Movement, underpins the Republic of Korea as a democratic republic.”
He went on to say, “Our government of popular sovereignty was able to come into being only on the foundation of this democracy,” adding, “The principles of democratic constitutional government, the Buma Democratic Uprising as a source of popular sovereignty, and the spirit of the May 18 Democratization Movement must take even deeper root in our society.”
He added, “I believe the Buma Democratic Uprising and the May 18 Democratization Movement take on even greater significance, particularly in the current circumstances as the insurrection is being overcome.”
