Mayor Min said this while attending the 30th Older Persons’ Day ceremony held that day at Muan Sky Wedding Convention: “I will make sure Jeonnam-Gwangju becomes a place where older adults, who understand the meaning of integration better than anyone, feel that ‘it was the right decision to become one again.’”
He also stressed, “I will ensure that older adults receive proper treatment when they are ill, can comfortably go wherever they want, and get the care they need when they need it.”
The ceremony was hosted by the Jeonnam Federation of the Korean Senior Citizens Association and attended by some 300 people, including Mayor Min, Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency Chief Kim Ho-seung, Joo Byung-jin, senior vice chairman of the Gwangju Federation of the Korean Senior Citizens Association, and heads of the association’s city, county and district chapters across Jeonnam-Gwangju.
The event was held to honor the contributions of older adults to the development of local communities and promote respect between generations and a culture of respect and filial piety toward older people.
In particular, under the theme “Jeonnam-Gwangju Reunited, Greater Happiness for Older Adults,” the event reflected on the significance of the launch of the integrated special city.
Lee Sang-gye, chairman of the Jeonnam Federation of the Korean Senior Citizens Association, said, “I hope you will be respected as ‘elders worthy of the name,’ sharing your wisdom and experience to help drive the remarkable growth of Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, reunited after 40 years.” He added, “I will do my utmost to support the association’s development and unity, and to help older adults enjoy active later years.”
The ceremony also featured awards for exemplary senior citizens’ associations and couples, as well as people who contributed to the development of senior welfare, along with celebratory performances for older adults. The Mokpo couple Kang Haeng-bok and Nam Sun-dan, who received the exemplary couple award, were recognized for their dedication to the local community, including spending 63 years together, raising four children and serving as the chair of a senior center.
