[Financial News] An Army officer on leave spotted a man in his 80s suddenly lose consciousness and collapse at a restaurant, and saved his life with first aid.
According to Newsis on the 15th, Lt. Col. Kim Dong-yeon, inspector staff officer of the Army’s 53rd Division, was having a meal with his family at a hangover soup restaurant in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, at around 11:40 a.m. on the 9th when he heard an urgent voice from near the entrance saying, “Honey, what’s wrong?”
Sensing that the situation was critical, Lt. Col. Kim approached the elderly couple and checked the condition of the man, who was estimated to be in his 80s.
After finding that the man’s pulse was barely detectable and his hands were cold, Lt. Col. Kim laid him on the floor and opened his airway. Once he confirmed there was no foreign object, he immediately began first aid.
He then asked the restaurant owner to call 119 and continued providing first aid until the emergency responders arrived.
The man reportedly regained a pulse and body warmth before the 119 ambulance crew arrived.
Lt. Col. Kim gave the paramedics a detailed account of the patient’s condition and handed him over to them. He then made sure the patient was safely transported to the hospital before leaving. The patient is reportedly now in good health.
The 53rd Division plans to present Lt. Col. Kim and their spouse with a commendation from the division commander.
“Although I was flustered and the situation was critical, I recalled the medical knowledge I acquired during my military service and did everything I could to help the elderly man regain consciousness,” Lt. Col. Kim said. “Thanks to the restaurant owner and the rescue workers’ prompt call and initial response, we were able to save the elderly man’s precious life.”
