[Financial News] A man in his 50s who went on a knife rampage at a large commercial complex in Incheon was found to have been carrying several million won in cash at the time of the attack.
According to Newsis and other outlets on the 15th, more than 6 million won in cash was found among the belongings of A, 59, for whom an arrest warrant had been sought on suspicion of attempted murder and carrying a weapon in a public place.
Earlier, witnesses said A had dropped 2.2 million won in cash at the crime scene; he reportedly had at least another 4 million won with him.
Investigators found that A was a recipient of basic livelihood assistance and, without a regular job or income, worked day-labor jobs intermittently.
A reportedly told police that he had raised the money by selling precious metals he owned.
Police plan to investigate the circumstances in which A came to be carrying the cash, including whether he had prepared it to flee after the crime.
A is suspected of attempting to kill 10 visitors by stabbing them with a weapon in the building of C&C (see&see), a large commercial complex in Guwol-dong, Namdong-gu, Incheon, at around 1:40 p.m. on the 13th.
Eight people were injured in A’s attack, while two were reportedly unharmed. One of the injured, a woman in her teens, was taken to hospital in cardiac arrest and underwent emergency surgery, but was reported to remain unconscious and under treatment.
A reportedly told police during questioning, “I was dissatisfied with the hospital where I received treatment, and I was also dissatisfied that I came under police investigation following a report by the hospital. I committed the crime to create a news story and attract attention so I could make (my grievances) known to society.”
Meanwhile, police applied for an arrest warrant for A the previous day on suspicion of attempted murder and carrying a weapon in a public place. After meeting with the Incheon Public Prosecution Office on the 15th, A is scheduled to undergo pre-arrest suspect questioning (a warrant hearing) on the 16th.
