【Financial News, Gangneung = Kim Gi-seop】Director Kim Jin-yu’s film ‘Journey There,’ which has drawn attention at film festivals in Korea and abroad for bringing Gangneung’s mills, wetlands and apartment complexes to the screen, will meet audiences in the director’s hometown of Gangneung ahead of its release.
According to the Gangwon Cultural Foundation on the 15th, a preview of ‘Journey There,’ whose production was supported by the Gangwon Film Commission, will be held at CGV Gangneung on the 22nd. Set for release on the 28th, the film is the second feature by director Kim Jin-yu, who is from Gangneung, and was made through the Gangwon Film Commission’s Gangwon Film Content Creation Support Program.
Much of the film was shot in Gangneung, giving audiences the added pleasure of spotting familiar neighborhood scenes on screen. Key filming locations include Bongbong Mill in Myeongju-dong, the former Ham Surgical Clinic, Jumunjin Jugong Apartment Complex 2, Sunpo Wetland, Bukgangneung Hanaro Mart and Gangneung Arts Center.
The film’s artistic merit has already been recognized at festivals. Last year, it won the Korean Film Directors’ Guild Plus M Award and the KBS Independent Film Award at the 30th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), as well as the New Perspective Award at the 51st Seoul Independent Film Festival (SIFF). This year, it was invited to the 48th Moscow International Film Festival (MIFF), the 25th New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), the 21st Paris Korean Film Festival and the 21st London Korean Film Festival, steadily expanding its profile overseas.
Applications to attend the preview can be submitted through the 18th via the online link posted on the Gangwon Film Commission’s Instagram and Facebook pages, or by phone. Successful applicants will be notified individually on the 19th.
HyunSang Shin, CEO of the Gangwon Cultural Foundation, said, “I feel a great sense of fulfillment seeing a work by a director born and raised in Gangneung, capturing the alleys and wetlands of the director’s hometown, expand its reach beyond Busan to Moscow and New York.” He added, “I hope that, starting with this preview, residents of the province will visit theaters and warmly support the work of local creators.”
