[Financial News] The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (SMOE) is developing an artificial intelligence (AI) short-answer and essay assessment support system called ‘Chaeum AI,’ which will also be used by the education offices of Sejong, Chungnam and Gyeongbuk.
SMOE said on the 15th that it will sign an MOU on the 16th in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province with the Sejong Special Self-Governing City Office of Education, the Chungcheongnam-do Office of Education and the Gyeongsangbuk-do Office of Education to jointly operate the AI short-answer and essay assessment support system.
SMOE signed MOUs with the Busan and Incheon Metropolitan Offices of Education in March, and with the Jeonbuk and Jeonnam-Gwangju Offices of Education in September. With this agreement, it will establish a framework for jointly operating ‘Chaeum AI’ with a total of seven metropolitan and provincial education offices. SMOE said the AI grading engine will spread to other metropolitan and provincial education offices, laying the groundwork for nationwide support for short-answer and essay assessments.
‘Chaeum AI’ is a system SMOE has been developing since 2025. It is intended to assist teachers with grading students’ short-answer and essay responses and providing feedback. SMOE said that operating 66 practice schools in 2025 allowed it to verify the reliability of AI grading for use in actual assessments. This year, it is expanding the number of practice schools to 135 and working to upgrade and refine the system.
Under the agreement, the participating education offices will share ‘Chaeum AI’ and jointly develop and review short-answer and essay assessment questions. They will also cooperate in areas such as providing teacher training to strengthen expertise in these types of assessments. The offices plan to further strengthen teachers’ expertise in short-answer and essay assessment through joint research and the sharing of assessment materials.
SMOE Superintendent Geun-sik Chung said, “Short-answer and essay assessments are an important direction for future-oriented assessment that measures students’ thinking and ability to express themselves,” adding, “Through cooperation among education offices, we will build a fair and reliable assessment system and actively support innovation in assessment in schools.”
