[Financial News] Improvements to the space insurance system have made guarantees and mutual aid coverage available to private aerospace companies.
On the 15th, the Korea AeroSpace Administration held a “Space Insurance Policy Briefing” for aerospace companies at Centropolis in Seoul and unveiled details of a new system introduced under amendments to the Act on the Development and Support of the Defense Industry, which took effect on the 8th.
Under the amendment to the Defense Industry Development Act, private aerospace companies can now join the Defense Industry Mutual Aid Association. Private aerospace companies that meet the membership requirements can use the association’s services, including guarantees needed for business operations and exports, as well as mutual aid coverage for facilities and equipment and liability for damages. A guarantee is a form of credit provision that covers risks such as contract defaults. Mutual aid, meanwhile, is an insurance-like system that compensates for losses resulting from accidental events.
The Defense Industry Mutual Aid Association has expanded its scope from serving as a specialized mutual aid institution that provides guarantees and mutual aid services needed by defense companies to include private aerospace companies. It offers lower guarantee and mutual aid premiums than other guarantee institutions and can pay out mutual aid benefits quickly. It also provides services tailored to small and medium-sized enterprises, including interest and legal support.
At the Space Insurance Policy Briefing, officials explained the purpose and main provisions of the legal amendment, the Defense Industry Mutual Aid Association’s membership process, services available to aerospace companies, and support programs for small and medium-sized enterprises. They also held a question-and-answer session on questions aerospace companies had about joining and using the services.
The expectation is that these improvements will broaden the financing and insurance options available to aerospace companies and, in particular, help ease the cost burden on smaller aerospace companies with relatively limited funds and staff. They are also expected to address the difficulties faced by companies operating in both the defense and aerospace sectors, which previously had to use separate guarantee arrangements for each.
The Korea AeroSpace Administration plans to continue providing guidance, together with the Defense Industry Mutual Aid Association, to ensure the new system is used in actual business settings. It also plans to take account of feedback from the field and expand the support base needed for aerospace companies to grow.
