[Financial News] Semiconductor-related stocks are plunging across the board on the domestic stock market. Large-cap semiconductor stocks, including Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, have fallen in the 9%–11% range, while the precision instruments sector—which includes companies in semiconductor materials, parts and equipment—has also dropped more than 8%.
Heavy selling by foreign investors has continued, with downward pressure appearing to spread from large-cap semiconductor stocks to related equipment and component stocks.
According to the Korea Exchange (KRX), as of 10:32 a.m. on the 15th, the KOSPI electrical and electronics sector index was down 9.71% from the previous trading day. The precision instruments sector was also down 8.44%. The KOSPI Composite Index fell 7.53% to 5,556.21, while the large-cap index declined 7.90%.
Semiconductor stocks with the largest market capitalizations led the index’s decline. SK hynix traded at 1,263,000 won, down 56,000 won (10.99%) from the previous trading day. Samsung Electronics was also down 21,000 won (9.05%) at 211,000 won. Samsung Electronics preferred shares fell 8.70% as well.
Stocks related to semiconductor equipment and components also extended their losses. Among the constituents of the precision instruments sector, Mirae Industry fell 11.97%, while DI and KC Tech dropped 10.65% and 10.90%, respectively.
KC fell 9.41%, and Woojin was down 5.28%. Selling pressure intensified across the sector as companies in related upstream industries weakened alongside large-cap semiconductor stocks.
Foreign investors’ selling stood out in investor flows. According to trading data by investor type for that morning, foreign investors were net sellers of 2.6772 trillion won on the KOSPI.
By contrast, individual investors were net buyers of 1.0759 trillion won and institutions net buyers of 1.4134 trillion won. Foreign investors put large volumes on the market, while individuals and institutions absorbed them.
A defining feature of the day’s downturn was that large-cap semiconductor stocks and materials, parts and equipment stocks fell sharply at the same time. As foreign selling weighed on the KOSPI overall, the electrical and electronics and precision instruments sectors plunged in tandem, dampening investor sentiment across the semiconductor value chain.
Key variables for the market going forward include whether foreign selling will ease and whether Samsung Electronics and SK hynix can pare their losses. Whether share prices of large-cap semiconductor stocks stabilize, and whether selling pressure that has spread to equipment and component stocks subsides, are also expected to be crucial to a sector rebound.
