[Financial News] People Power Party lawmaker Bae Hyun-jin criticized the Democratic Party of Korea, saying it was attempting political retaliation over allegations related to the “fake credentials” of the daughter of independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon, which the party recently raised.
Appearing on CBS radio’s “Park Seong-tae’s News Show” on the 14th, Rep. Bae strongly criticized the Democratic Party, saying, “Rep. Han Dong-hoon is a member of the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee and is abroad conducting the parliamentary audit in the United States. They’re trying to retaliate politically while he’s away from the country.”
Rep. Bae went on to explain the reason for the opposition’s attacks, saying, “This is a contrived attempt to dredge up a case that was closed in the past and tarnish Rep. Han Dong-hoon’s moral character. Hasn’t Rep. Han made pointed, accurate criticisms of Justice Minister Kim Seung-won and a series of DMZ landmine incidents—criticisms that really stung?”
Earlier, Democratic Party lawmaker Yoon Gun-young claimed at the National Assembly’s audit of the National Police Agency by the Public Administration and Security Committee on the 12th that, despite allegations including that Rep. Han’s daughter had papers ghostwritten for her and had violated copyright law becoming a social issue, not a single search warrant had been sought and no witnesses had been questioned.
On the same issue, Rebuilding Korea Party lawmaker Jung Chun-saeng also said, “How was the investigation into former Minister Cho Kuk’s children handled? They carried out 90 search-and-seizure operations. They also summoned them for questioning. But (in the investigation of Rep. Han’s daughter) there were zero search-and-seizure operations and zero summonses for questioning. Does that make sense?” Cho Kuk, director of the Rebuilding Korea Party’s Institute for Innovation Policy Research, also criticized this recently on social media.
In response, Rep. Bae stressed that the cases involving former Minister Cho Kuk’s children and Rep. Han’s child were fundamentally different, saying, “Wasn’t there clear physical evidence that Professor Jung Kyung-sim had used Photoshop to forge a certificate of commendation? Those matters came to light through tip-offs, not through an investigation.”
In particular, citing attorney Seo Jeong-wook, a conservative-leaning political commentator often described as “anti-Han” (opposed to Han Dong-hoon), Bae said, “Attorney Seo has lately been bringing out all the report cards of Han Dong-hoon’s daughter to prove it, saying, ‘Han Dong-hoon’s daughter has always been a genius.’” She asserted, “To borrow Attorney Seo’s words, ‘Cho Kuk and Han Dong-hoon’s daughter are different.’”
Meanwhile, on the 14th, four civic groups, including the People’s Livelihood Economy Research Institute and Voice of Seoul, announced that they had filed complaints against prosecutors involved in suppressing the investigation at the time, on charges of abuse of authority and dereliction of duty, with the National Office of Investigation of the Korean National Police Agency and the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency.
