[Financial News] SeAH Besteel Corporation is teaming up with Canadian nuclear equipment company BWXT Canada to expand its business in components for small modular reactors (SMRs) and large reactors. The partnership aims to broaden its existing nuclear power business, centered on spent nuclear fuel transport and storage containers (CASKs), into the manufacture of reactor forgings and major equipment.
SeAH Besteel Corporation said on the 15th that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with BWXT Canada to expand cooperation in nuclear manufacturing.
Under the agreement, the two companies will explore ways to cooperate on supplying forgings for nuclear power equipment and related components needed for new large reactor and SMR construction, as well as projects to extend the operating lives of existing nuclear power plants.
BWXT Canada is a company engaged in commercial nuclear equipment manufacturing and engineering, primarily in North America. According to BWXT, it has supplied at least 325 nuclear steam generators to power plants worldwide and also manufactures key equipment, including reactor components and heat exchangers. It is also involved in new nuclear projects, including SMRs and large reactors.
SeAH Besteel Corporation has expanded its nuclear equipment business, focusing on spent nuclear fuel transport and storage containers. It obtained certification from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) in 2019 and passed a quality assurance review by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in 2022.
In January last year, it supplied eight spent nuclear fuel transport and storage containers to the North American market. SeAH Besteel Corporation has been working on the project since winning an order for the containers from French nuclear company Orano TN in 2019.
SeAH Besteel Corporation plans to use this partnership to expand its nuclear business from CASK production into the manufacture of forgings and components for SMRs and large reactors.
A SeAH Besteel Corporation representative said, “We plan to expand business opportunities in the nuclear equipment sector based on our cooperation with BWXT Canada.”
