[Financial News] People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk criticized the insistence on an acting official to drop the charges on the 15th, saying, “If they keep insisting on an acting official to drop the charges, before long the presidency will be run by an acting president too.” He claimed that the ongoing arrangement of having acting officials lead the Ministry of Justice, the National Police Agency, the Prosecution Office and other agencies is intended to have the indictment against President Lee Jae-myung dropped.
At a Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly that day, Jang said, “President Lee thinks of nothing but getting the charges against himself dropped. To entrust that task to someone, he needs acting officials who will do as they’re told.”
He said, “The president, who drove drunk without even calling a designated driver, is trying to get his own case dismissed through someone else,” and added, “President Lee, I hope you come to your senses.”
Regarding the confirmation hearing held on the 14th for Kim Ji-yong, nominee for head of the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency, he criticized it as “an empty shell of an agency, with consultations with the Prosecution Office on case-transfer procedures not even complete and its computer network not connected.” He added, “Yet nominee Kim Ji-yong says there are no major problems. It may not be a major problem for this administration and the nominee, but for the public, there is no bigger problem than this.”
He went on to criticize the hearing, saying, “Yesterday’s hearing ended as an utterly absurd exercise in vetting one of our own. Ruling-party lawmakers asked, from beginning to end, only, ‘Aren’t you pro-Yoon?’ and ‘Are you really one of us?’” He added, “Nominee Kim put on a tearful show of self-denial, pleading for them to recognize his loyalty. In a situation like this, who among the public would believe in political neutrality?”
Regarding the knife rampage in Guwol-dong, Incheon, he said, “While the female victim was fighting for her life during emergency surgery, President Lee was looking at Bukangi and taking selfies.” He added, “If the president had not been informed by then, the Blue House was not in its right mind; if he had been informed and was still walking around smiling, then the president was not in his right mind.”
He continued, “He loudly promised to build a system that puts life and safety first, but now he is even making the bizarre claim that a golf course is a workplace for the president.” He asked, “Is receiving briefings while swinging a golf club a system that puts life and safety first?”
Jang said, “The president’s greatest responsibility is to protect the safety of the public.” He added, “If he is neither capable of protecting them nor even willing to do so, he should step down from that position now.”
