[Financial News] HD Construction Equipment Co., Ltd. is accelerating development of ultra-large power-generation engines to meet rising electricity demand from artificial intelligence (AI) data centers.
HD Construction Equipment Co., Ltd. said on the 15th that it recently held a startup ceremony at its Gunsan campus for the DX77, a 3-megawatt (MW)-class diesel engine for power generation.
The DX77 is a diesel engine with a 77-liter displacement and maximum output in the 3MW class, making it the largest engine HD Construction Equipment Co., Ltd. has developed. Its maximum output is enough to meet the average electricity consumption of about 7,000 households. The company plans to begin rigorous performance and durability testing following the startup ceremony, with mass production set to begin in 2028.
The DX77 is a high-speed engine that runs at 1,800 revolutions per minute and is characterized by high fuel efficiency and output. Its high output relative to its size can reduce the space required for installation, and it is also well suited to modular data centers, whose facilities can be expanded in stages according to power-generation capacity.
High-strength, wear-resistant materials and a high-efficiency cooling system have been applied to maintain stable performance even during prolonged high-speed operation. The replacement interval for filters has also been extended to 1,000 hours, making maintenance easier. The company plans to offer a long-term service warranty when the product is launched.
HD Construction Equipment Co., Ltd. is also expanding its range of power-generation engines. It currently produces the 1MW-class DX22 engine at its Incheon plant. At its new engine plant in Gunsan, which is scheduled for completion at the end of October, the company plans to begin mass production of power-generation engines in stages, starting with the 1.5MW-class DX37 in early 2027. It plans to complete its lineup of 1–3MW-class power-generation engines by mass-producing the DX77 in 2028 and the 2MW-class DX50 in 2029. The new Gunsan plant is expected to have the capacity to produce up to 1,250 engines a year.
The company is also stepping up its push into the North American market. It plans to expand its gas-engine lineup to target North America, where demand for on-site power-generation equipment is growing amid the spread of AI data centers and delays in connecting to the power grid. The DX77 was also designed with the potential for expansion in mind, so that it can run on various fuels, including gas and hydrogen, in the future.
HD Construction Equipment Co., Ltd. President Jae-young Moon said, "The DX77 is an important product that will take the competitiveness of our generator-engine business to the next level. Through rigorous performance and durability testing, we will refine the product and secure new growth drivers in the global power-generation market."
